Design
Ken Adam, an Academy Award winning production designer known for his work on the James Bond movies and Dr Strangelove, was hired to create several new concepts for Planet of the Titans. He created a radically re-designed USS Enterprise and conceptual designer Ralph McQuarrie who had recently worked on Star Wars, was asked to produce some designs based on the concept.
The images created by McQuarrie showed the saucer module of the ship separated from the rest of the vessel, an element which had been mentioned in The Original Series but never seen on screen. Although the flattened hull design by McQuarrie bears some resemblance to the USS Enterprise seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation, this was in fact created by Andrew Probert from a concept design for Star Trek: Phase II by Matt Jefferies. Other designs created by McQuarrie included the interior of the Enterprise, as well as a space dock and shuttlecraft designs. One of his designs included an inhabited asteroid which had been transformed into a space station.
Mock-ups, or, study models of the new USS Enterprise concepts were created, and these were used briefly on-screen in later years. One model appeared in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock as a docked ship at a starbase. It appeared again in Star Trek: The Next Generation as a damaged ship in the episode "The Best of Both Worlds". Another model was used in the Next Generation episode "Unification I" as a derelict ship at a surplus depot.
McQuarrie later went on to work on designs for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and the Adam/McQuarrie designs would finally be reused for Star Trek: Discovery.
